| Name: | Fran |
|---|
Character: Fran
Series: Final Fantasy XII
Version: post-canon
Age: unknown, left her hometown 50 years ago
Gender: female
Sexuality: uninterested, presumably straight
Appearance: The first thing that is immediately noticeable when first meeting Fran would probably be the large set of rabbit ears that all viera have. In Fran's case - and in the case of most viera - the color of her ears matches that of her hair, as both are white. Whether or not this is due to age is never made clear, although it should be noted that all the viera we see in the game seem to share the same coloration, so it may be a racial trait.
The clothes and armor that she wears seem to be largely chosen for mobility over functionality over form - as they leave quite a bit of her body exposed to the elements as well as any attacks directed her way. Both clothes and armor are black save for a slight trace of red on the sleeves of her shirt. She also usually carries a bow around with her - this is usually slung across her back.
Personality: Largely aloof and quiet, Fran tends to leave much of the speaking to other people - saving her input until necessary. When she does actually speak, it's rarely more than a sentence or two. On occasion, a sort of subtle humor can be glimpsed in what few words she does say, although it can be hard to notice at times.
Despite her tendencies to come off as cold and possibly uncaring, she does actually care for people, however. In particular, Balthier as well as the sisters she left behind when she left her village, despite the fact that she effectively exiled herself when she left some 50 years ago.
Abilities/Weaponry: Quite unsurprisingly, Fran's weapon of choice is the bow she habitually wears slung across her back. Given that she spent nearly 50 years wandering across Ivalice, I wouldn't be horribly surprised if she knew the basics of how to use other weapons; however it is very rare to see her use anything other than her bow. She is also capable of using magic, however this is largely limited to assorted healing magic and status-changing spells, along with several Quickenings - attacks that are magical in nature and take anywhere
from a third of Fran's MP to all of her MP. Fran's are as follows:
-Feral Strike: A series of blazingly fast punches, the last of which causes an explosion. Takes a third of Fran's total MP to cast.
-Whip Kick: Similar to Feral Strike, but with kicks instead of punches. Casting it takes two-thirds of Fran's total MP.
-Shatterheart: Causes several large spears of ice to manifest around the enemy and then shatter. Casting it takes all of Fran's total MP.
Finally, like all viera, her senses of hearing and smell are better than that of humans.
Weaknesses: Along with the weaknesses that you'd expect to come hand in hand with having heightened senses, Fran is also sensitive to changes in the Mist, particularly when the Mist burns - which makes her go literally berserk. As Paixao has no Mist to speak of, the likelyhood of this happening is fortunately relatively slim. However, the lack of Mist brings along an assortment of problem in and of itself, as Mist is what powers the higher level magicks in Ivalice. Without Mist, Fran has no way to regain MP save for any Ethers or Elixirs she happened to bring with her and Quickenings may well be impossible.
Also, although she may have voluntarily left her home and thereby won her freedom in a sense, she did so at the cost of her past - by viera law, viera who leave the wood are viera no longer. As a result, she is no longer welcome in either her hometown or the forest her hometown is in. The life of a viera cut off from the wood and the Green Word is a life of solitude; however Fran has decided that she prefers a life of solitude over remaining in the wood. Nonetheless she does care for the sisters she left behind (Jote and Mjrn), even going so far as to tell Mjrn to not follow the same path that she has followed, wishing to save her from the solitude she lives through. To a similar extent, she cares for Balthier, even if it isn't immediately noticeable. Every good sky pirate needs a partner, after all.
History: Very little is known about Fran's early life, save for the fact that some 50 years ago she left her home, claiming that although the viera may begin in the wood it is not the only end they may choose. At some point towards the end of these 50 years, she and Balthier crossed paths and somehow managed to end up in partnership of sorts.
On a visit to the treasury of the Consul of Rabanastre, Balthier and Fran run across Vaan - a Rabanastrean street urchin - who had also thought to take advantage of the consul's inaugural fete to raid the treasury. Unfortunately, the local insurgence had also thought to take advantage of the lax security at the fete and in the resulting commotion Balthier, Fran and Vaan are captured and taken to the Nalbina Dungeons. Fortunately they manage to escape and return to Rabanastre, rescuing Basch fon Ronsenberg - a supposed traitor and king-slayer - while making their escape.
Upon their return to Rabanastre, Fran and Balthier would have liked nothing better than to be once more on their way. However, this was not to be, as it turns out that a group of bounty hunters have kidnapped one of Vaan's friends in order to lure in Balthier and Fran. Although Fran and Balthier are loath to go to her rescue and thus walk into the trap set by the bounty hunters, Vaan eventually persuades the pair to go to her rescue. Eventually, this leads them to meet up with Ashe (the princess of Rabanastre, presumed to have commited suicide several years earlier) and then head to fetch the Dawn Shard.
Unfortunately, no sooner do they get their hands on the Dawn Shard when a fleet of Archadian ships, headed by the Leviathan, arrives on the scene - intent on getting their hands on the Dawn Shard as well. In order to for the freedom to return to Rabanastre, the party is forced to hand over the Dawn Shard. However, when the Archadians decide to test the power of the Dawn Shard using the ship's drive, the Mist released not only creates an explosion that destroys the entirety of their fleet but also sends Fran into a berserk rage, due to the Mist burning. Somehow, the party manages to escape despite these setbacks and even manages to reclaim the Dawn Shard.
The events that follow only serve to pull into the pair deeper into what turns out to be little more than a plot set in motion be a rogue Occurian - the god-like beings that guide Ivalice - to set history back in the hands of man. This plot comes to a head on top of the Ridorana Pharos with the destruction of the Sun Cryst. This would have made for a satisfactory end had it not been for the fact that the Mist that the Sun Cryst released before its destruction allowed Vayne Solidor to awaken something far more dangerous - the Sky Fortress Bahamut, the largest airship in all of Ivalice, fully capable of destroying entire armadas on her own.
Naturally, our little band of intrepid heros heads into the Bahamut with the intent of defeating Vayne for once and for all. Fortunately, they manage to succeed. Unfortunately, the Bahamut does not take the beating quite as well and begins to fall towards the city of Rabanastre. Urging Vaan and the others to leave in the Strahl, Fran and Balthier head to the Bahamut's engine room, managing to restore enough power to get the Bahamut to fly a fair distance away from the city before crashing. By some stroke of luck they manage to either escape before the Bahamut crashes or weather the crash remarkably unscathed, returning to reclaim the Strahl from Vaan and Penelo sometime later. At some point after this, Fran finds herself abruptly summoned to Paixao.
